Dr. Eric Parks Raises
Money for Local ASTD Chapter
Birmingham, Alabama ASTD
Chapter members welcomed Dr. Eric Parks, founder/CEO of ASK
International, as he presented a fundraising workshop on
e-Learning: From Design to Deployment Using
PowerPoint.
The half-day fundraising event raised money for the
chapter while addressing the e-Learning needs of its members.
Built off of his article,
From Design to Deployment Using PowerPoint,
featured in ASK International’s March 2003 e-Learning
newsletter, Dr. Parks examines the fundamental shift in e-
Learning development towards desktop applications and away
from complicated programming. Attendees of the workshop

Easy Steps to Successful Project Management
Communication is key. We all know how easily
miscommunication can occur. Verbally communicating your
needs via phone or in person can work very well and will
better imply the tone of your message. Seeing a person’s
face or hearing his or her voice helps a great deal. Email
can also be very functional, but do be careful to write an
email in a manner that your tone will not be misunderstood.
I also believe that email is an excellent way to follow
through and confirm a verbal conversation. When
communicating, it is always a “best practice” to ask for
confirmation regarding your needs to ensure all parties are
in agreement. Having communications in writing can be
crucial if issues arise. Most importantly, understand that
everyone communicates differently so it is best to assess
individual needs in order to ascertain the best avenue of
