M-Training: Is Mobile Training Right for your Organization?

M-Training, which stands for mobile training, is an emerging field of study focusing on the development of training for the PDA or Pocket PC user. This is an important area of focus because cellular phones, PDAs, Pocket PCs, and broadband wireless connectivity are changing the way we communicate. At one time a cellular phone was used solely for voice communications; today cellular phones serve as digital cameras, text-messaging tools, and gaming centers – all with online access. Pocket PCs are adding additional capabilities including high-speed broadband connectivity and a wide range of popular tools and productivity software such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Calendar Management and Internet Explorer. There is no question that users desire an all- purpose portable device that takes care of their information and communication needs. It is not unusual for these devices, selling for over $500, to be backordered at many solutions provider sites.
The question we must ask ourselves is this; given the overall poor track record we have had publishing courses for fully configured PCs, why do we think we can successfully publish to small devices with less mature applications and technologylearn more

Avoiding a Bitter E- ftertaste: Six Vendor Red Flags

Contrary to the predictions of many inside and outside of the training field, e-Learning has not conquered the training landscape part and parcel. Although progressive technologies and techniques have definitely fueled growth over the past five to seven years, committed implementation of and reliance on e-Learning and its close relatives – such as knowledge databases, virtual classrooms and online performance support – have fallen short of many of the sweeping forecasts of the late ‘90s. ASK International believes that poor products and services delivered by e-Learning vendors have far too often failed to meet organizational needs and deserve much of the blame for the unrealized vision. In short, training decision-makers who are courageous enough to sip from the new waters have too often been left with a bad taste in their mouths…and many do not sip again. Fortunately, most unqualified vendors exhibit some telltale characteristics and behaviors early in the selection process that indicate your implementation may fail or your curriculum may fall flat if hired. Caveat emptor: Interview carefully and stay alert for the following red flags... learn more

Creating a Knowledge- Based Organization with an Intranet-Based Learning Environment: Lessons from the Trenches

While traveling to a client in Ohio recently, I read the Wall Street Journal. Although I enjoy reading the Journal, I’ve never found information that is life changing. But this time, a single quote was to forever alter my view of the relationship between organizations, education and learning technology. General Electric CEO Jack Welch, in a letter to stockholders, pointed out what enabled GE to achieve 10%+ growth in all its business segments: 'The ability of an organization to continually learn from any source and rapidly convert this learning into action is the ultimate competitive advantage.' In our organizations, knowledge has historically been acquired through classroom and print-based systems. While many organizations have experimented with CD- ROMs, they pale in comparison to the potential of Intranet- based knowledge acquisition... learn more
