It's Alive! The Hidden Costs of e-Learning

e-Learning course design, development and hosting have become easier, faster and more affordable over the last five-years. As designers, developers and publishers, we are getting better at estimating the development and deployment costs of e-Learning. Most companies can estimate the time and effort it will take to produce one hour of Web-Based-Training; the same goes for virtual classroom and hosting costs. However, if asked to estimate the time and effort associated with updates or fixes to an already published course over a 5-year period, most of us would not have a clue where to begin. This article addresses what I view as a major hidden cost of e-Learning – maintenance of course materials over time. Why are course content changes and the resulting maintenance costs so comprehensive? Experience reveals a few key factors… learn more

TRAINING GOES MOBILE

ASK has added a new webinar to its roster with "Is Mobile-Training Right for Your Organization?" Motivated by the fact that cellular phones, PDAs, Pocket PCs and broadband wireless connectivity are changing the way we communicate, companies are deploying technology to the mobile worker on devices that are integrated with voice, sound and multimedia capabilities. This workshop examines the technical and design challenges associated with the deployment of e-Learning on a Pocket PC. Coupled with the TeraLearn Learning Content Management System, this course provides specific examples of how to publish quality WBT on a wireless handheld device using popular Microsoft Office products (PowerPoint, Word, Excel). Join Dr. Eric Parks, founder and CEO of ASK International, as he identifies the technical challenges associated with M-Training including screen size, memory, color depth and user input. Discuss the questions that must be addressed in order to deploy e-Learning in a highly restrictive environment and learn how to deploy effective M-Training to the appropriate end-user audience... learn more Register to attend by Clicking Here
5 Technical Specs Every Organization Must Address

The implementation of e-Learning requires a multitude of pre-production planning by the developers design team. Certain technical specifications must be addressed with customers to ensure a streamlined pre-production process. The five most common technical specifications are listed below in no particular order. In fact, Nick Arentz, senior member of the ASK Technology Team, says 'They each go hand-in-hand in contributing to successful program designs from the technical perspective.' Arentz adds, 'Most of the issues that the programming team and I encounter are related to the capabilities and limitations of the delivery technology and environment.' With these technological parameters in mind, Designers have the ability to facilitate a quality e-Learning program that will satisfy the training team and ensure the transfer of knowledge to the end-user... learn more
