Cultivating Your Own e-Learning
Team:
Developing Expertise Within Your
Organization
Lisa Ahrons, Project Manager, ASK
International
The decision to create e-Learning
in-house versus outsourcing requires a careful look at the
time
and resources your organization will need to dedicate to the
effort, as well as the benefits associated with in-house
production. In general, some potential benefits include time
savings, ROI, development of internal expertise and decrease
in production costs. With so many benefits, why can e-Learning
be so difficult to implement? A few reasons include:
- The organization’s culture may
not support e-Learning
- Poor end-user systems configuration
and/or poor access speed
- Resistance from instructors and
administrators being forced from their comfort zones
- Underestimated infrastructure
challenges
- Poor quality courses
- Unmotivated end-users
- End-user incentives are unclear
- Dependency on current single
solution approach
These challenges are difficult
to overcome for organizations that are new to e-Learning, as
such mentoring is a practical solution...

Winning Executive e-Learning
Support
Eric R. Parks, Ph.D, CEO/founder, ASK International
As the 1983 program chair for the Orange County Chapter of the American Society for Training and
Development (OCASTD), I wanted to truly understand how
executives viewed training and how as training professionals
we could better communicate this value in our respective
organizations. I arranged to have the President/CEO from
a local Fortune 500 business speak to the chapter at our
monthly dinner meeting. In welcoming the CEO from one of
the nation’s largest Health Insurance Providers, I was
wondering how he viewed the value of training. As he
stepped up to the podium and looked at the audience of over
150 ASTD members, he said, “Smilers and Filers is what
we call you behind your backs in the Board Room.”
The audience was stunned. He went on to explain that training
and trainers are viewed by executives as risk adverse,
compliance oriented, HR-types providing limited impact on the
bottom line. He was a strong believer in training, but
he said that most training organizations failed to communicate
how training solves organizational needs...

The e-Learning Cost Conundrum
Dr. Eric Parks, President and founder of ASK International, will speak
at the Orange County California ASTD Chapter’s Special
Interest Group Meeting at UC Irvine on September 8, 2004. The
presentation, Calculating the Total Cost of
e-Learning, highlights the fact that most e-Learning
vendors are struggling to understand the costs associated with
e-Learning and are in turn losing money. This state of affairs
makes cost-analysis a particularly challenging component if
you are depending on vendor estimates for budget proposals or
cost allocation. Join Dr. Parks as he presents examples on how
to gather, analyze and project the costs associated with the
design, development and deployment of e-Learning.
Genie Z. Laborde, Ph. D.,
Founder and CEO of International Dialogue Education
Associates, Inc., describes Calculating the Total Cost of
e-Learning as “absorbing and practical. The
information reflected years of experience in e-Learning. [Dr.
Parks] is generous with his time and information...
