In grade school, and later in college, I never looked forward to midterms and final exams. I was a highly visual learner and had the misfortune of literally thinking in pictures. As a consequence, I did much better on essay type exams than the more common multiple choice and true or false questions. It wasn’t until I moved onto graduate school, where complex abstract thinking was valued, that I began to perform well on tests.
