As training grows into the 21st century, e-Learning simulations are multiplying, largely due to advances in development tools, delivery technology and instructional design theory. Although simulations take many forms (device simulations, branching interactions, and sophisticated collaborative games are a few examples), most involve placing the learner in a virtual “environment” and asking him/her to perform (rather than just learn) critical job-related tasks. As such, designing simulations inspires many creative possibilities, but also poses numerous questions and challenges once you begin. Because creating simulations requires considerable effort and resources, it is important that they advance performance as desired. Creating Exceptional Web-Based Learning

After I concluded a presentation at a national web conference recently, one attendee waited patiently while many others came up to ask me questions.... What authoring tools do I recommend? How much time does it take to produce your first web course? What does it cost to convert existing courseware to the web? After I addressed these issues, everyone but the lone woman and a crew working busily to set up for the next presenter were left. The woman approached me with much concern on her face. She told me that she worked for an operations department of a Big Four accounting firm and was recently transferred to the training department to head up the company's first web-based learning development effort. To prepare for her new assignment, she reviewed numerous CBT and web-based training programs.
