What You Don’t Know About PowerPoint WBT: Every PowerPoint WBT Tells A Story
Eric Parks, Ph.D., CEO/Founder, ASK International
PowerPoint is designed primarily as a linear presentation tool. It facilitates a presenter’s ability to communicate concepts, information and content to their audience. PowerPoint has many custom animation effects to enhance presentations such as entrance, exit and emphasis effects as well as path animation. However, for those who choose to design web-based training using PowerPoint, the challenge is to do more then inform by producing a course that engages the learner and results in enhanced performance. When we set out to design the Animal Abuse Awareness curriculum for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) using PowerPoint we started with the end-user needs in mind. We asked ourselves: What would meet the needs of a police officer population? What would engage the learner? What would enhance transfer of learning on the job? Reserve Your PowerPoint For Web-Based Training Workbook Today
Eric Parks, Ph.D., CEO/Founder, ASK International
I am preparing a workbook for instructional designers, trainers, subject matter experts and developers interested in implementing PowerPoint for web-based training. Its publication in PDF format and/or print will be available as of July 2007. The 8" by 11" approximately 250 page workbook will include ready to implement PowerPoint templates including a wide range of games, role based simulations and interactive exercises. Why did I write this workbook? My interest is two fold. First cycle time to design, develop, test and deploy online learning is too long for most organizations. Most corporate web-based training projects take months yet organizations need to publish learning content online in weeks. Secondly, the cost of online learning isn’t in design and development but in managing the life cycle (maintenance). My experience with over 200 Fortune 1000 companies is that content updating impacts approximately 25% of WBT published pages. In addition content growth can be as much as 60% per year. As a consequence the cost of e-learning is hidden in the burden of updating and adding new content to courses. PowerPoint development for Web-Based Training makes this major challenge easier to manage.
